Priceless HealingChoosing a Therapist

A first call with a therapist is a two-way interview. You are not being difficult by asking questions. A good clinician will welcome them. Use the prompts below, and pay as much attention to how someone answers as to what they say.

There are no wrong answers, only the right fit for you.

1
What experience do you have with what I’m bringing in?
A therapist who regularly works with your concern, whether trauma, parenting, or a loved one’s addiction, will feel more attuned from the start.
2
What would our first few sessions look like?
Knowing the rhythm ahead of time takes some of the anxiety out of beginning.
3
Which approaches do you use, and why those?
Modalities like EMDR or mindfulness shouldn’t be buzzwords. Ask how they would actually apply to you.
4
How will we know the work is helping?
Good therapy has a direction. You deserve to feel movement, not only a place to vent.
5
What are your fees, and do you provide a superbill?
Clarity on cost, including out-of-network reimbursement, prevents uncomfortable surprises later.
6
What’s your availability and cancellation policy?
Consistency is part of the medicine. Make sure their schedule genuinely fits your life.
7
Have you supported people in situations like mine?
Familiarity with your background, identity, or circumstances helps trust arrive faster.
8
What happens if it turns out we’re not the right fit?
A secure therapist welcomes this question and will help you find a better match without it being awkward.
9
What’s expected of me between sessions?
Understanding the commitment up front helps you decide if now is the right time to begin.
10
How do you keep growing as a clinician?
Ongoing training, consultation, and supervision are signs of a careful, humble practitioner.
