EMDR can sound mysterious from the outside. This guide walks you through what it actually is, what a session feels like, and the questions almost everyone asks first.

What EMDR actually is

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) uses gentle, guided bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or tones, left then right) to help your brain reprocess experiences that got “stuck.” Instead of reliving a memory, we help your nervous system finally file it away, so it loses its emotional charge.

It is
Structured, evidence-based, and led at your pace. You stay awake, aware, and in control the entire time.
It isn’t
Hypnosis, mind-reading, or having to retell every painful detail out loud. None of that is required for it to work.
The eight phases, at a glance

We won’t rush. Early phases can take several sessions. Building safety always comes first.

1
History & planning
We map your story and choose what to work on, together.
2
Preparation
You learn grounding and “resourcing” skills first.
3
Assessment
We identify the target memory, belief, and body sense.
4
Desensitization
Bilateral stimulation while the memory is held lightly.
5
Installation
A truer, calmer belief about yourself takes root.
6
Body scan
We check that the body feels settled, not just the mind.
7
Closure
Every session ends with you grounded and steady.
8
Reevaluation
Next time, we check what held and what is next.
What a session actually feels like
1
We begin grounded, a few minutes settling in, never diving straight into the hard material.
2
You bring a memory or belief to mind while I guide gentle bilateral stimulation: eye movements, taps, or tones.
3
You simply notice whatever comes up, whether images, feelings, or sensations, without forcing or analyzing it.
4
We pause often. You stay in the driver’s seat, and we close with you calm before you leave.
The question everyone asks
“Will I have to relive it?” No. You notice the memory at a distance, like watching scenery from a train. If it ever feels like too much, we have a stop signal, and you can use it anytime.
How to prepare for your first session
Wear comfortable clothing and hydrate beforehand. This is body work as much as mind work.
You don’t need to script anything or decide what to “work on.” We’ll find it together.
If you can, leave a little soft space afterward rather than rushing into a packed day.
Bring your questions. Curiosity and a little nervousness are both completely normal.
A few more common questions
How many sessions will I need?
It varies. A single recent event can sometimes resolve in a few sessions; complex or layered trauma takes longer. We reevaluate together as we go. There’s no fixed script.
Is EMDR only for PTSD?
No. Because it works with beliefs and the body, EMDR can also help with anxiety, body image, relationship patterns, and the worry loops that take up your mental space.
What if a memory feels too intense?
You’re always in control of the pace. We build a stop signal early, return to grounding whenever needed, and never push past what feels safe.
Can EMDR be done over telehealth?
Yes. EMDR works well online using on-screen visual movement or self-tapping, with the same structure and care as in person, available anywhere in Texas.
